The world's first online tutor

Developed over several years with leading educationalists and designers, Maths-Whizz Tutoring Plus simulates the behaviour of a private tutor to provide the student with tuition based around their unique ability. Maths-Whizz guides students through a personal learning plan, assessing them continually.

Students who use Maths-Whizz Tutoring Plus for 45 to 60 minutes a week see their maths ages improve, on average, by 1.6 years in the first year of use.

 Brings maths concepts to life

Lessons are delivered over the internet and come in the form of interactive animations. Over 1200 animations are directly matched to the national curriculum, which means learning covers all the maths topics and is matched to what they will need to know in school.

Each animation covers a specific learning objective, and starts with a “teacher section” where the maths concept is introduced in a visual and engaging way. This is followed by interactive animated questions where students get to answer.

Importantly, if students don’t get the right answer, they almost always get more than just “wrong, try again”, as this doesn’t really do anything to help them grasp the concept or gain real understanding (yet this is what most content on the internet does).

Rather, something visual or textual happens to give the child a clue or that “aha!” moment. Then and only then they try again. Sometimes there may be several layers of help depending on complexity. In this way students are guided to gain understanding and confidence.

See our sample maths exercises.

Just like a personal tutor

There’s more to Maths-Whizz than just academically powerful interactive lessons. To provide each student with one-to-one tutoring tailored to their ability, Maths-Whizz is powered by an intelligent tutoring system, designed to simulate the behaviour of a human tutor.

When a student first gets tuition with a private tutor, the tutor will start by trying to find the student’s overall ability, which maths topics they are confident at, and which less so. In this way the tutor can decide what to teach the student and which areas to cover first.

Similarly, when a student first logs into Maths-Whizz, he or she is presented with a series of questions carefully designed to get an initial assessment of the student’s ability in several of the maths topics. In this way Maths-Whizz gets an initial understanding of the child’s ability and their strengths and weaknesses.

This initial assessment usually only lasts approximately 30 minutes, and at the end of that you can see the student’s maths profile or “maths age” report.

[Click the image to see the report in action.]

More confident students may find their maths age is ahead of their actual age, whereas less confident students may find their maths age is lower than their actual age.

Furthermore, their ability may vary across the different topics. An eight year old may find that she has a maths age of 8.5 in addition, but only 7.25 in fractions. Each child really has a unique maths profile. This is why it is so difficult for teachers in school to cater for every child’s individual needs – because they are all so different!

As a result many students who don’t use Maths-Whizz find they are unchallenged or, worse, left behind and can lose confidence and fail to reach their potential as a result.

Tutoring constantly adapts

Once a child has completed the initial assessment they receive interactive maths lessons and practice tests based on their profile. These lessons are targeted to their ability at that time. This means they are getting just the right tuition that they need at that stage of their development.

Students receive lessons in all the maths topics but extra attention in weaker topics. In this way, over time, their maths age not only improves, but they also catch up in their weaker topics, giving them a more 'rounded' maths profile.

The tutor is flexible, just like a human tutor. This makes it very different to a fixed course of study that you may find at other websites.

For example, a student logs into his Whizz account, starts his tutoring and receives an animated fractions lesson, set to his ability. If he does well the tutor delivers some exam-style questions to confirm his knowledge, in the understanding that classroom tests don't have the benefit of exciting characters and graphics! The child makes the cognitive connection between what he has learned with animations and test questions of the kind he may get in school. In this way Maths-Whizz prepares the child for success in school tests.

On the other hand, if the child struggles with the fractions lesson, there is no point moving him forward until this is dealt with. So, just like a human tutor might, the mathematical principles behind the fractions lesson are immediately addressed with a different animated exercise. This may be key to understanding the more complex concept - using a different, and often simpler, explanation.

That is what a good human tutor does and that is what Maths-Whizz does.

Of course, the child may sometimes do only moderately well in the animated part of the lesson. In this case the virtual tutor will move onto another topic, and when the child next logs in, or a week later, it will present him with the same lesson. Sometimes all a child needs is a fresh chance, a little reinforcement, to understand the maths concept.

For this reason students are sometimes presented with lessons they have done before, and this is entirely intentional. It is important that students progress only when they have fully understood the concept at hand.

The Maths-Whizz tutoring system makes decisions on what to teach based on how a student is progressing, continually assessing the student’s progress, in just the way that a good private tutor would. A student can log in and make progress even when there is no parent or supervising adult. You don’t have to worry about what to teach your child next, the Maths-Whizz tutor does that for you.

top

Why Maths-Whizz over alternatives?

Other websites may offer resources, animations, or fixed courses of study, but Maths-Whizz is the only service that takes a child on a full journey, continually tailoring and adapting to their unique requirements, to reach their potential.

Does this mean that Maths-Whizz replaces human teachers?

No. At the end of the day the power of a human tutor - a good one, that is - is the ability to look directly at a student and give them the attention, care and confidence that can make a great difference to a child.

But Maths-Whizz can cater to a student in a way a human tutor can’t, using interactive animations that engage children, and in ways that allows a child to progress in their own time at their own pace, whilst providing measurable results and reports to parents. Students never have to worry about Maths-Whizz losing patience with them! In truth, the personal electronic and human tutor approaches complement each other to give a child the best possible chance of success.

Maths-Whizz means people can get one-to-one tutoring in a more affordable and accessible way than they done have in the past – at home, over the Internet, in their own time.

Recommended Usage

Experience has shown that to get the best long term results, students should use Maths-Whizz alongside their school classes (or home education plan), with a weekly routine of “little and often”.

Based on results from thousands Maths-Whizz students, our recommended use for Maths-Whizz Tutoring Plus students is as follows:

  1. Underachieving students, i.e. those whose 'maths age' is behind their actual age (you will be able to see their maths age in the parent report after they have completed the assessment), or students who need more time to absorb maths concepts, are recommended to use Maths-Whizz Tutoring Plus for 90 minutes a week. Based on the most recent data, 96% of students accelerate their maths age by more than a year in 12 months' of use, with an average improvement in maths age of more than 2 years.
  2. The majority of students should spend 45 to 60 minutes per week, where the average expected maths age improvement over 12 months is between 1.3 and 1.6 years.
  3. Students who are gifted and talented and have maths ages well beyond their actual age can be challenged with just 30 minutes of Maths-Whizz usage per week.

top

Proven Results

Maths-Whizz has proven over the last 3 years that students who use Maths-Whizz for 90 minutes a week improve their maths age in the first year of use by, on average, 2 years.

Parents can log in to view progress reports showing exactly how their student's maths age is progressing. You get measurable results.

What Parents Say

Real parents of Maths-Whizzers share their experiences with Maths-Whizz® Tutoring Plus.

"We LOVE your product. Anna is a five year old Russian girl who has just started her schooling in UK and Maths-Whizz not only improves her math skills but also helps her a lot in learning English! Good luck with your wonderful job."

Ulyana
(22/11/2010)

"Maths-Whizz has assisted to increase my sons confidence and skills and I am sure that it has attributed to his excellent SATs results and him now being in the top set of Maths at his Secondary school. I believe the completion of exercises on-line has also made it easier for my son to adapt to using the on-line system the secondary school use to complete homework."

Amanda
(6/10/2010)

"The teacher is fabulous and has already stepped up my son's work and is at last 'fulfilling his true potential'. This is definitely on the back of all he has learnt through Maths Whizz and I have recommended it to several people."

Sonia
(16/9/2010)

"Maths Whizz is an excellent product, can't recommend it enough. Our first year's subscription expires in September, and we shall definitely be signing for another year. I just wish my daughter was taught maths using your system in school!"

Sharon
(13/8/2010)

"As a home educator, mathswhizz has been a godsend to me, no preparation or planning lessons, just straight in and doing maths each day. The lessons being tailored to the individual is wonderful as I have 2 children, one ahead of their age and one behind. They have both improved significantly and enjoy buying pets for their bedrooms."

Lianne
(11/8/2010)

"Unlike other maths games online, Maths Whizz varies the exercises constantly and actually adjusts the levels of the lessons it sets to the ability of your child. This is a great feature as they get to cover a much wider area of the curriculum than perhaps they would via self choice. The exercises are fun and eye catching and the ability to earn credits in order to buy virtual pets is a great way to encourage extra maths practise!"

Alexa
(4/8/2010)

"My 10yr old loves Maths Whizz and will go on the site without being prompted. I'm only too happy to recommend the site to schools, parents and colleagues. Keep up the good work."

Parent
(2/8/2010)

"Despite being a secondary teacher, I dreaded doing extra maths with my daughter who is in reception! She had very little stamina and became upset when she didn't understand a concept immediately. Although I knew she needed extra help, I was frightened I would put her off maths if I pushed too hard. Since subscribing to Maths Whizz, both her ability and confidence have grown. She regularly does twenty minutes of online tutorials and actually enjoys doing written work with me to support these!"

Diane Moore
(2/8/2010)

"Home education, and the use of Maths Whizz has freed him up to work at his own pace, with every step wonderfully and clearly explained, (as many times as you like) with the ability to move forward where he can and go slowly in the areas in which he struggles, with constant hard evidence of progress. This is exactly what is needed for these 'special' children and no matter how 'tactful' schools are or how carefully they 'differentiate' work, or how much support they get, they cannot possibly achieve this. Home study on Maths whizz is a completely different approach. It works wonders. He has made around six month's progress in the 4 months since starting. For a child who was failing so badly in school, this is astonishing."

T. Brand (UK home educator)
(2/8/2010)

"My son, who is 12 and has special needs and is home educated, has been using Maths Whizz for some months now. Maths Whizz has been a real breakthrough for a child with special needs who has for six years struggled (despite full time 1:1 learning support) in mainstream school, always feeling 'left behind'. He quickly learned to avoid even attempting to understand the work rather than demonstrate to others and (more importantly) to himself the true magnitude of his difficulties."

T. Brand (UK home educator)
(2/8/2010)

"I think it is a great website and really helps Joshua to understand the mathematical concepts needed to excel in this subject. It is done in a very child friendly way that encourages them to do more and enjoy the challenge. The fact that Maths-Whizz shows where the child goes wrong and how to correct it is invaluable. I would also recommend this to home schoolers."

Gael
(2/8/2010)

"I like Math-Whizz for the fact I get to see how the children are supposed to learn to do maths. This is nothing like how I was taught. As the children don't get math books to bring home, it's hard for a parent to keep up"

Yancy Jones
(2/8/2010)

"My daughter is really enjoying it and especially likes the fun visuals and sounds"

Emma Ricketts B.Ed (hons) Primary Education, (Teacher, mum and Childminder)
(2/8/2010)

"My son does not think it is real work since he is on a computer! and has significantly improved his SATs KS1 prediction."

Emma May
(13/5/2010)

"My daughter Elizabeth has been using Whizz for 3 months and has just been moved up to the Year one class (she is in reception) for maths...the teacher has said she is really 'maths smart'. Thanks very much!"

Melanie Bridge
(10/5/2010)

"I coughed up to use it to supplement our programme, but very quickly it became obvious that it was of a quality that lent itself beyond supplementation and it became the core of our maths curriculum. It acts as the spine if you like, upon which all other activities hang off as a response to a visible need for further practice or additional concept teaching/checking. Technology cannot compensate for a lack of imaginative, compassionate, principled and effective teaching. The people who created this site get that, they have put the teaching in pole position and made the technology serve it, rather than the other way around."

Sarah Fonto, Home Educator
(16/2/2010)

"we think it is a great programme and my daughters really enjoy it."

Philippa Spits
(16/7/2009)

"I am writing to say how pleased I am with Maths Whizz so far. Both my boys are motivated and are enjoying the lessons. Well done on creating such stimulating and instructive lessons."

UK Parent
(10/7/2009)

"If Maths Whizz was available in his school I think they would have been able to see how good it was as each child can effectively go at their own pace and the online tutor is set up for each child's level. This would benefit children of all abilities and help to support "below and above average" UK Maths primary children."

Dr Jones, Aberdeenshire
(1/7/2009)

"She loves Maths-Whizz and plays almost everyday. She has lagged behind in maths but maths whizz strikes the right balance for her. She loves creating her own environment, her own little space in the e-world,caring for her plants, shopping, buying toys, decorating her bedroom etc. She also likes competing with her class mates."

Janet Echols
(13/6/2009)

"he loves it and I hope he doesn't lose his enthusiasm. I'm sure he won't. I think it is a great way of learning. So thanks from a pleased mum."

Karen Cope
(19/5/2009)

"I think Maths Whizz is fantastic. I work in IT myself and have been unimpressed by all the "educational" CDs that purport to teach children, but are little more than silly games in disguise. Maths Whizz however is the genuine thing. The paced lessons really do try to teach and then test the child, while the credit system and rewards and games are a stroke of genuis."

Gia Luc
(1/5/2009)

"Can I mention I am delighted the progress both my children have made since using Maths-Whizz® in December. They are both much more confident and love trying the exercises as they find them stimulating and amusing."

David Gordon
(13/03/2009)

"I am impressed at the service and we love Maths-Whizz®"

Kate Phillips
(06/03/2009)

"My son Connor who is 5 has been using the product for a number of months and in that time his Maths skills have developed considerably but more importantly he views the subject as fun and a game. It has also developed his IT skills and incidentally his Reading skills. Maths Whizz is a great product and has certainly helped my son, it shows us a way forward for Educating all of our Children."

Paul Malone, Southampton
(18/02/2009)

"Kieran has missed being able to do this at home and he had just managed to get onto the leaderboard for his school and stay on there. This was really motivating him to do some each night."

Jane Jeffs
(06/02/2009)

"Whizz is now working well and both my children are loving the program; my eldest has even learnt how to divide by 10 and 100!!!!! A great success in the McLean household."

Kimberly McLean

 1. What is Maths-Whizz®?

Maths-Whizz® is an online private tutoring service for 5 to 13-year-olds. Following an initial online assessment/test the service delivers a personalised programme of lessons to your child through your home computer. As your child uses the service, the lesson programme dynamically adjusts depending on their progress. Maths-Whizz® covers the entire National Numeracy Strategy and uses the teaching and creative animations found in our successful Maths-Whizz® Teachers' Resource CD Roms which over 3,000 schools in the UK now incorporate in their teaching of this key subject.

top

 2. Aren’t there lots of similar websites?

No. There are plenty of websites offering maths exercises, tests, simple animations etc, but currently none provide a full tutoring service catering for a child’s individual abilities for all ages between 5 and 13.

Other websites are nice, but Maths-Whizz is a full tutoring service that generates real progress for students in maths.

top

 3. Are there any effective alternatives to Maths-Whizz?

Yes, you can get a private tutor to teach a student, though the cost will typically be between £25 and £45 per hour. The additional challenge here is finding the right tutor that “clicks” with your child.

You can get a whole year of unlimited tuition with Maths-Whizz Tutoring Plus for £99.99 per year or, if you prefer monthly payments, £14.99 per month.

top

 4. Is it recommended?

Yes. it was recommended on the BBC “Click” program in April 09, and also prior to that had been on the news on US television.

The Maths-Whizz animations are used in over 3500 schools in the UK (and abroad) and our software won the major industry (BETT) awards in 2006.

 top

 5. How much will it cost to subscribe?

  • £99.99 per year, or
  • £14.99 per month. With each payment you make, you purchase a further month of tuition for your child.

top

 6. How often can my child use Maths-Whizz®?

Your child can access lessons from their virtual bedroom as often as they like. The lessons take the form of colourful interactive animations, which means children enjoy the experience whilst learning. To avoid burn out, we recommend parents should restrict lessons to no more than 45 minutes per day. This is important as best results are achieved using Maths-Whizz® regularly over a sustained period of time, e.g. 20 - 45 minute sessions 2-3 times a week.

top

 7. When can my child access Maths-Whizz®?

As Maths-Whizz® is an online service it is available whenever you have access to the Internet. The beauty of Maths-Whizz® is that you can build your child's studies into your routine. Access your child's personalised tutoring programme from home, friends' or relatives' and even from Internet cafes or hotels.

top

 8. How secure is information about my child?

When you add a student to your parent account we only collect the minimum information to deliver an excellent service (name, age, sex, username and password). For more information on how your child's information is stored please read our Privacy Policy (which can be accessed from the link at the foot of every page on www.whizz.com).

top

 9. When can a parent access the Parent Account?

Whenever and wherever you have access to the Internet. You can view an up-to-date report on your child's progress at any time.

top

 10. Who can I contact for help/technical assistance?

Please email info@ilearn.co.nz  Alternatively, call us on (+64)  09 4314466

top

 11. Can Maths-Whizz® help with tests and exams?

Yes!

After successfully completing an animated exercise, the student is usually presented with five exam style questions. This is to ensure that the understanding the student has gained through the animated exercises is transferable to traditional paper-based questions. This way Maths-Whizz® not only helps to develop understanding and confidence, but also improves exam results. Maths-Whizz® currently meets key objectives covered in the National Numeracy Strategy for Key Stages 1 and 2 and Year 7.

top

 12. How does Maths-Whizz® differ from other products?

Books and CDs can help a child to learn but the Maths-Whizz® service teaches by identifying your child's ability level in each topic of the maths curriculum, delivering specific lessons that address your child's needs and dynamically adapting the lesson programme as your child progresses. In addition, most of our animations contain help functions to show how the correct answers can be found.
You can keep track of your child's progress at all times through the Report Card, accessed through the parent account. The report breaks the curriculum down into topics, and shows how well your child is performing in each topic, as well as showing their overall performance.

Some Private Tutors offer excellent teaching services to children. Maths-Whizz® is not seeking to replace private tutors, but to offer a more convenient and affordable service with the common goal of developing your child's maths ability. With private tutoring costing between £20 and £40 per hour, we believe Maths-Whizz® offers excellent value.

Other tutoring companies typically offer prescriptive, centre-based learning that you need to fit your routine around. The teaching methods used are not right for all. Maths-Whizz® not only offers you the flexibility of using the service whenever and wherever you want, but also allows your child to enjoy their lessons through the colourful interactive animations and the rewards they can earn.

top

 13. What is an Assessment?

The Assessment is a 'test' to assess your child's ability across the key topics set out in the National Numeracy Strategy. We have presented the Assessment in an exam style so we can understand his/her basic maths ability topic by topic. The output gives you a guide to your child's actual maths ability and determines the initial lesson plan for the Maths-Whizz® service.

Please do not help or let others help your child with the Assessment. A false result will generate an unrealistic lesson plan, and disqualify you from our Money Back Guarantee.

top

 14. Why is an Assessment necessary?

The Assessment allows the Maths-Whizz® Virtual Tutor to create a unique lesson plan which will cater to the needs of the individual student, a plan that will build confidence in their weaker topics and fortify their stronger ones.

top

 15. Can I let my other children use Maths-Whizz®?

If you want more than one child in a household to use Maths-Whizz® they will all need to be separately registered, assessed and paid for. Allowing more than one child to use a single Student Account totally disrupts the continual assessment process and is prohibited by our terms and conditions. However you only require one Parent Account, from which you will be able to access all of your children's details.

top

 16. What are the minimum system requirements?

PC Requirements:

  • Pentium II 400 MHz or AMD K6-2 or 100% equivalent processor
  • Windows 98, 2000, ME or XP
  • 64Mb RAM
  • 16 bit colour (though 32 bit is ideal)
  • Sound card and speakers (essential for Key Stage1, optional for Key Stage 2 and above)
  • Recommended minimum screen resolution 1024 x 768 pixels

MAC Requirements:

  • G3, G4 Mac 300MHz
  • Mac OS X version 10.1 with 128Mb RAM or Mac OS 8.6 or 9 with 64Mb RAM
  • Recommended browser: Mozilla Firefox

We recommend that you should have a broadband internet connection to use Maths-Whizz .

top

 17. What is 'Maths Age'?

Maths age is a term we use to define maths ability, similar to the way that 'Reading Age' helps to define reading ability. We use information given in the National Numeracy Strategy to calculate maths age to the nearest quarter year (e.g. maths age 8.25 = equivalent maths ability to age eight and a quarter).
